Description
Description
The collection consists of: a Soldbuch (104x147mm, better than very fine) in leather cover (130x177mm, better than fine); two assault day documents towards the Infantry Assault Badge (209x149mm, near very fine); a post war Heer discharge document (204x329mm, very fine).
The Soldbuch is an Ersatzausfertigung (replacement issue), dated to June 5, 1943. The assault day documents were issued by the 5th Company of Infantry Regiment 520. They state that Haug participated in two assault days on the Eastern Front, July 30 and 31, 1941, which count towards the achieving of the Infantry Assault Badge. They are dated to June 1, 1942. The discharge document is dated to August 21, 1945. The collection comes with research on Haug’s units provided by the previous owner.
Footnote: Helmut Haug was born on January 23, 1909 in Stuttgart. He joined the army in 1939 or earlier and served mainly with Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon (Replacement Battalion) 481, Grenadier-Ausbildungs-Bataillon (Training Battalion) 97, and the 5th Company of Infantry Regiment 520. Haug received the Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen (West Wall Medal) at an unknown date. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class on August 9, 1941. On October 7 of the same year, Haug was admitted to hospital in Bad Liebenstein (central Germany) for being shot through the right forearm, fracturing his elbow bone. He received a Wound Badge in Black on November 15 and was released from hospital on December 16, 1941. Haug was promoted to Oberleutnant of the Reserve on January 1, 1943. He received two more awards, the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords on April 20, 1944, and the Iron Cross 1st Class on March 30, 1945. Haug survived the war and was discharged from the Heer on August 21, 1945.
