Germany, Wehrmacht. A Close Combat Clasp, Silver Grade, First Pattern by Funcke & Brüninghaus

(Nahkampfspange in Silber). Constructed of silvered zink, the obverse consisting of a central square oak leaf wreath, topped by a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a mobile swastika, situated above a crossed bayonet and stick grenade overlaying a magnetic metal backplate, flanked on each side by four rays and four oak leaves with two acorns, the reverse with a barrel hinge and tapering horizontal pinback meeting a flat wire catch, maker marked with the characteristics upside-down logo of Funcke & Brüninghaus, Lüdenscheid, measuring 98.91 mm (w) x 27.04 mm (h), weighing 31.8 grams, demonstrating significant loss of silver finish throughout the base metal, a first pattern clasp in very fine condition.
