(Verdienstorden vom Deutscher Adler, Verdienstkreuz mit Stern, Etui, und Verleihungsurkunde). Instituted 1 May 1937. (1939-1943 issue). A superb Order of the German Eagle, II Class set with award document and paperwork to Italian diplomat Alberto D’Agostino, featuring:
1. A neck cross, constructed of silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms joined together through the quadrants by NSDAP-style German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas on white enameled discs, the twelve o’clock arm topped by a fan suspension with an integral loop and ring retaining a period original full-length neck ribbon, the reverse of the integral loop stamped with a silver content number of “900”, otherwise unmarked but demonstrating the physical characteristics of manufacture by Gebrüder Godet, Berlin, measuring 50.03 mm (w) x 58.14 mm (h), weighing 28.5 grams, demonstrating only minor flecking to the enamels, in extremely fine condition.
2. A breast star, constructed of silver with enamels, the obverse consisting of a six-pointed radiant star, bearing a central white enameled Maltese Cross joined together through the quadrants by NSDAP-style German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas on white enameled discs, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a barrel hinge and narrow tapering vertical pinback meeting a rounded catch, the pinback stamped with a silver content number of “900”, otherwise unmarked but demonstrating the physical characteristics of manufacture by Gebrüder Godet, Berlin, measuring 65.36 mm (w) x 75.30 mm (h), weighing 43.6 grams, demonstrating only minor flecking to the enamels, in extremely fine condition.
3. A presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux red leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilded and embossed NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, surrounded by a gilded border, the interior with a padded white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a depressed black velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal snap button, unmarked, measuring 16 cm (w) x 24.5 cm (l) x 3.5 cm (h), demonstrating material fatigue to the exterior liner which includes a large spot of wear to the base, in better than very fine condition.
4. An regulations and statutes book for the Order of the German Eagle, constructed of off-white paper stock with black ink, with interior pages featuring one-sided, typewritten particulars of the award in Fraktur script, initially published on 1 May 1937, measuring 21 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (h), in extremely fine condition.
5. An award document, constructed of off-white card stock with black ink, named to “MINISTERIALDIREKTOR HERRN ALBERTO D’AGOSTINO”, awarded in Berlin on 2 March 1938, certified by a facsimile signature of AH and the handwritten signatures of Minister of Foreign Affairs Joachim von Ribbentrop and Presidential Chancellery Chief Otto Meissner, measuring 25 cm (w) x 36 cm (h), with minor discolouration evident in addition to a small tear to the lower right edge, in near extremely fine condition.
6. A Second World War diplomatic travel pass for the Western Theatre, constructed of orange card stock with black ink and typewritten inscriptions, issued in Berlin on 12 July 1940 and entitling D’Agostino to travel in occupied regions from 13 through 26 July 1940, measuring 10.5 cm (w) x 15 cm (h), in extremely fine condition.
7. A travel pass, constructed of off-white paper with multi-coloured ink, issued to D’Agostino for travel within Germany from 23 March until 10 April 1940, entering the Reich at Tarvis (Tarvisio), measuring 21 cm (w) x 30 cm (h), in extremely fine condition.
