Germany, Third Reich. A Reich Finance Administration/Customs Official’s Visor Cap for Lower Ranks, by Clemens Wagner

(Reichsfinanzverwaltung Schirmmütze für Mannschaften). A Customs Official’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced side walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with dark green piping, while an additional length of identical piping surrounds the edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an aluminum Customs-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by blackened magnetic metal studs which accommodate a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black on the obverse and brown on the reverse. The interior is fully encompassed by a brown oilcloth liner, while a wide brown leather sweatband surrounds the interior of the walls. The crown retains an intact plastic moisture guard which covers the maker’s mark of Clemens Wagner, Braunschweig, with a size mark of “58”. Also stamped onto the crown is a Reichsfinanzverwaltung (RFV) property mark. The cap measures approximately 26 cm (w) x 28 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). Some issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include bending to the walls which results in some distortion of the cap’s structure, sporadic fatigue of the base material, the loss of the lower peak’s wreath insignia with evidence of previous restoration, and material fatigue throughout the sweatband. This experienced cap remains in a very fine condition.
