Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, Transitional Example, by Robert Klaas

(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains original sharpness to the edges and tip. The obverse bears an acid-etched inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso features a transitional maker’s mark in the form of the classic kissing crane logo of Robert Klaas, Solingen, situated above a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code of “M7/37” for the same. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. A single piece of lacquered brown wood composes the handle grip, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates in a nickel-plated alloy lower crossguard, similarly marked with right notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that screws in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is a period scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat, with the latter retaining a loop for the addition of a hanger, as well as an internal spring catch to firmly hold the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include moderate tarnishing and running marks throughout the blade, moderate loss of nickel plating to the applicable fixtures resulting in some surface oxidation, and evidence of repainting to the scabbard shaft with a black underlay visible (suggesting that it may be repurposed from an NSKK dagger). This transitional example remains in a worn and very fine condition.
