Description
Description
(Schutzpolizei Extraseitengewehr). An extremely well-preserved Schutzpolizei dress bayonet, measuring 48 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 33 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the tip and lower edge. A wide fuller runs the majority of the length of the top edge of each side of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & CIE, SOLINGEN”, while the obverse ricasso is marked with the firm’s classic knight’s helmet logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver hilt which features a hooked quillon and pommel, the latter in the form of a double-sided eagle’s head. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a unit code of “S.B. 14963”, indicating distribution to Schutzpolizei Berlin personnel. Two pieces of polished staghorn compose the handle grip, and are fastened in place with dual domed aluminum rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered Ordnungspolizei insignia measuring 20 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, consisting of a magnetic metal shaft fully lined on the exterior with black leather. Nickel-silver fittings are secured to both the tip and throat, with the latter bearing a protruding stud for the accommodation of a frog, as well as a mark of “S.B. 14963”, indicating a matching accompaniment to the blade. A functional catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and storage are evident, and include some bubbling to the nickel plating of the blade, scratching of the nickel-silver fittings, and some warping of the scabbard liner. This superb original set remains in an extremely fine condition.
