Germany, Ordnungspolizei. A Fire Police Sawback Dress Bayonet, by Alcoso

(Feuerschutzpolizei Bajonett). A well-preserved Feuerschutzpolizei (Fire Police) dress bayonet, measuring 40 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the tip and lower edge, and features double-sided fullers and a serrated upper edge. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ALCOSO” for the former firm of Alexander Coppel, Solignen, surrounding the company’s classic scale logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy hilt with a classic double-hooked quillon, hooked pommel, and with an intact black leather buffer pad covering the seam. A code of “85” is stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are fixed in place with dual metal rivets. Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the inclusion of a frog, while a functional catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade, wear of nickel plating to the hilt, some loss of scabbard paint, and evidence of a removal of a frog with corresponding disruption to the underlying paint. This unusual sawback bayonet remains in a better than very fine condition.
