Description
Description
(Luftwaffe Schirmmütze für Offiziere). An extremely well-preserved Luftwaffe Officer’s visor cap, constructed of dark blue-grey wool with a fine whipcord weave. It features reinforced side walls which are lined on the exterior with a ribbed black mohair cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with lengths of silver aluminum wire piping, while an additional identical piping fully surrounds the outer edge of the crown. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a dark blue wool base overlaid by a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 72 mm (w) x 50 mm (h). Affixed to the centre of the cap band directly below the eagle is an additional insignia consisting of a padded dark blue wool base bearing a hand-embroidered wreath and cockade executed in silver and dark blue aluminum wire with a red wool centrepiece, measuring 130 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by pebbled and silvered studs which accommodate a chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of twisted and roller silver aluminum wire, adjusted with dual sliding knots of identical construction. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in matte black on the obverse and in green on the reverse. A multi-piece slate-grey rayon liner encompasses the interior, which also features a white dark slate-grey leather sweatband which surrounds the side walls, itself perforated across the forehead with ventilation holes. Visible on the crown are the traces of a maker’s mark of “PEKÜRO”, indicating manufacture by the firm of Peter Küpper, Wuppertal-Ronsdorf. Otherwise unmarked, the cap measures approximately 24.5 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 18 cm (h). Minor material fatigue is visible to the interior liner, with friction and moisture consistent with wartime wear rendering the maker’s mark illegible, but this high-quality Officer’s cap demonstrates no notable damage or other signs of concern, and remains in an extremely fine condition.
