Germany, Luftwaffe. An Observer Badge, by F.W. Assmann & Söhne

(Beobachterabzeichen). Constructed of silvered zink, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel and oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, overlaid by a swooping Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the eagle in position (both demonstrating classic cascading tool marks), with a barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting around wire catch, unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of manufacture by F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid, measuring 51.01 mm (w) x 53.48 mm (h), weighing 43.8 grams, demonstrating moderate loss of finish to the wreath with scratching throughout the back of the eagle, a mid-war example in better than very fine condition.
