Description
(Luftwaffe Fotoalbum). A fascinating private wartime photo album compiled by a Luftwaffe flier who saw extensive service with Nahaufklärungsgruppe 4, a reconnaissance unit with a distinguished service record and notable personnel, constructed of an off-white paper stock binding secured together with a magnetic metal brace and featuring 37 interior pages of identical construction, pasted to the pages are 135 private images, consisting of 133 wartime photos taken by the owner and personnel of his unit, opening with images of his time in flight school and in training at locations in Hamburg, Oschatz, and Schweidnitz, notably with many images taken from the cockpit of an Arado Ar 96 training aircraft, some depicting the Messerschmitt Bf-109 in the air alongside the novice pilots, with other scenes of the owner and his comrades at leisure, with the last third of the album depicting the owner’s time at the front while in service with Nahaufklärungsgruppe 3 and Nahaufklärungsgruppe 4 from October 1944 until April 1945, including shots commemorating the former’s 300th unit sortie, as well as the Knight’s Cross ceremony of Leutnant Karl-Heinz Wilke, as well as the latter’s 400 unit sortie, notably concluding with two photos taken in the 1990s depicting the owner and former unit leader Reschke, with virtually all images featuring candid and detailed handwritten captions by the owner, many identifying personnel depicted in the photos, measuring 190 mm (w) x 130 mm (h), with some material fatigue evident in addition to the detachment of a small number of photos which now float loose inside the pages, a fascinating and highly-personalized look at wartime Luftwaffe service in near extremely fine condition.
