A group of documents belonging to Luftwaffe General Günther Sachs, including a handmade card congratulating Sachs on receiving the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, constructed of off-white card stock, the cover with a swooping German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika and key above a map of the Königsberg (Kaliningrad) region in purple ink, the interior with inscription of “UNSEREM HOCHVEREHRTEN DIVISIONSKOMMANDEUR, HERRN GENERALMAJOR SACHS, ZUR VERLEIHUNG DES RITTERKREUZES HERZLICHSTE GLÜCKWÜNSCHE” (“OUR HONOURED DIVISION COMMANDER, MAJOR GENERAL SACHS, HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE KNIGHT’S CROSS”), signed “UNTEROFFIZIERE UND MANNSCHAFTEN DES STABES DER 18. GRATULIERT IHREN DIVISIONSKOMMANDEUR, HERRN GENERALMAJOR SACHS, ZUR BEFÖRDERUNG UND WÜNSCHT IHNEN, HOCHZUVEREHRENDER HERR GEENRAL, WEITERHIN VIEL KRIEGS- UND SOLDATENGLÜCK” (“LIGHT FLAK DIVISION 93 CONGRATULATES ITS DIVISIONAL COMMANDER, MAJOR GENERAL SACHS, ON HIS PROMOTION, AND WISHES THE HONOURABLE GENERAL MUCH HAPPINESS IN WAR AND SOLDIERING”), measuring 210 mm (w) x 292 mm (h), in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Günther Sachs was born on 4 May 1903 in Springe, Lower Saxony, Germany. He enlisted in the Heer (Army) on 16 March 1921, later transferring to the fledgling Luftwaffe on 1 April 1935. He served in a number of Luftwaffe flak units during the war, and attained the rank of Generalmajor (Major General) on 1 December 1944. Highly decorated, Sachs was awarded the German Cross in Gold on 3 January 1944 and the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 24 January 1945. Sachs survived the war and surrendered to the British on 8 May 1945, being released from captivity on 25 February 1948. He died in Venice, Italy, on 15 July 1962.
