Germany, Kriegsmarine. An S-Boat Badge, Type II, by Schwerin

(Schnellboot-Kriegsabzeichen 2. Form). Constructed of gilded and silvered zink, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Kriegsmarine eagle clutching a mobile swastika, surrounding a central S-Boat cutting through waves, with its bow extending beyond the edge of the wreath, the reverse with barrel hinge and horizontal pinback meeting a flat wire catch, with a stabilizer emanating from the swastika demonstrating characteristic striations, designer marked “W.E. PEEKHAUS, BERLIN” and maker marked “SCHWERIN, BERLIN”, with characteristics of the firm’s Variation 2 design, measuring 51.38 mm (w) x 59.95 mm (h), weighing 32.7 grams, accompanied by its period original package of issue, constructed of light brown paper stock, the exterior bearing a black space for the addition of a maker’s mark, measuring 58 mm (w) x 105 mm (h), demonstrating loss of finish throughout, a Variation 2 badge in very fine condition.
