Description
Description
(Kriegsmarine Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, Stoffausführung, mit Feldpost Briefe). A German Cross, Cloth Version, from the estate of Kapitänleutnant Wolf-Heinrich Retzmann, who held command positions in a Kriegsmarine minesweeper unit, consisting of a double-overlaid eight-pointed starburst, featuring a dark navy blue wool base with the star executed in silver aluminum wire and grey threaded embroidery, bearing a central white rayon disc overlaid by a black threaded mobile swastika, with its arms trimmed with silver aluminum wire piping, situated within a circular gilded laurel leaf wreath, wrapped in ribbon and joined together at the bottom by a plaque bearing an institution date of “1941”, with both the inner and outer edges of the wreath trimmed with red threading, the reverse retaining a mostly intact black paper liner, unmarked, measuring 70 mm in diameter, weighing 7.2 grams, in extremely fine condition.
Accompanied by a lot of 21 Feldpost letters and original envelopes, primarily from Retzmann’s fiancée and later wife, Marianne Pein, supplemented by two wedding invitations dedicated to Pein’s parents; Retzmann’s Gehaltsbuch (Pay Book); and two period photographs depicting Kriegsmarine personnel (persumably including Retzmann) during a social occasion onboard a Kriegsmarine vessel, a highly personal and researchable collection in extremely fine condition.
