Description
Description
(Oldenburg M1862 Kürassier Metalhelm). A well-preserved Oldenburg Model 1862 Kürassier Metalhelm (metal helmet), constructed of a silvered tombak shell. The crown is topped by a gilded brass oval plate, fixed in position with three of four domed rivets, which culminates in a protruding spike of identical construction. An integral ridge set into the shell extends from the back of the plate and reaches the lower rear edge of the helmet, where the helmet terminates in a three-segment lobster tail, with eleven domed gilded brass rivets and a rim of identical construction maintaining the tail’s structural integrity. The shell is flanked on each side by gilded brass discs which accommodate an original two-piece chinstrap, constructed of a padded blackened leather base which is topped by cascading gilded brass chinscales. The two links fasten together at the centre with a sliding stud and functional buckle incorporated into the scales and leather base, respectively. Situated below the right disc is an 1894 pattern cockade, painted in an Oldenburg blue and red motif. Affixed to the peak is an insignia consisting of a gilded brass eight-pointed starburst, overlaid by a central silvered Oldenburg coat of arms, measuring 11.5 cm (w) x 11.5 cm (h). A squared protruding visor completes the exterior features, and is similarly trimmed along the edge with a gilded brass rim. The interior retains an original leather ring which formerly accommodated a liner. Unmarked, the helmet measures approximately 19 cm (w) x 32 cm (l) x 31 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). Some issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include a missing spike rivet, some denting to both the shell and fixtures, fatigue of the chinstrap’s leather underlay, the loss of the imperial cockade, and the loss of the interior liner. This rare and ornate helmet remains in a better than very fine condition.
