Germany, Imperial. A Blue Glazed Teacup Set, By Kpm, 1915

A short mug style teacup, blue glazed porcelain with a 1914 Iron Cross motif encircled by a gilt wreath opposite the handle a gilt ring on the interior lip and around the exterior base, handle plain, the bottom marked with the red orb, KPM, scepter and two iron crosses, numbered 103/106, measures 100mm (w) x 82mm (h), chip along the base and small scuff to handle, light wear to gilt, in very fine condition.

The saucer, porcelain with a thick blue glazed band encircled by a gilt ring on each side, bottom dated “4. September 1915.” in gilt along the edge, marked in the middle with the red orb, KPM scepter and two iron crosses, numbered 103/106, measures 140mm (diameter), light scratches throughout, remains in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: KPM (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur) was created in 1763 and has been led by kings and emperors, providing tableware for every Prussian Kaiser thereafter. The first retail store was opened in Berlin in 1855. In 1918, the monarchy ended, and the company was renamed to Staatliche Porzellan-Manufacktur (State Porcelain Manufactory). From 1919-1932, the company’s designs were largely influenced by New Objectivity, where less is more and patriotic symbols such as the Iron Cross were presented for individuals to show their support for Germany. The company is still active under a sole shareholder and continues to produce art and household items. The mark presenting an Orb with KPM below and a scepter was used until 1917.
