Description
Description
(Bayern 1. Weltkrieg Ersatzpickelhaube aus Filz für Mannschaften Infanterie). A well-preserved Bavarian Infantry “Ersatz” Pickelhaube (spiked helmet), constructed of field-grey pressed rabbit fur felt. The crown is topped by a circular gilded brass disc, fixed in place with four domed rivets, accommodating a protruding spike of identical construction, which features five ventilation holes distributed around the stem. A gilded brass spine extends from the back of the disc and terminates at the edge of a protruding integral neck guard. Affixed to the peak is a gilded brass insignia consisting of a central crowned Bavarian coat of arms, flanked by lions rampant, situated above a banner bearing an inscription of “IN TREUE FEST” (“STEADFAST IN LOYALTY”), and measuring 11.5 cm (w) x 9 cm (h). The helmet is flanked by gilded brass studs formerly accommodating a chinstrap and cockades, all of which have been lost to time. A protruding visor completes the exterior features, and is reinforced along the rim with gilded brass, with a domed stud of identical construction set in place on both sides for secure attachment. The interior is encompassed by a brown leather liner which culminates in ten fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet for the accommodation of a drawstring which has been lost to time. A magnetic metal ring fastened to the top of the crown maintains the structural integrity of the spike. Unmarked, the helmet measures approximately 18 cm (w) x 26 cm (w) x 13.5 cm (h). Some issues consistent with age are evident, and include loss of gilt finish to the metal fixtures, loss of the chinstrap and cockades, material fatigue of the leather liner, loosening of the spike, and minor bending of the shell structure. This scarce wartime economy helmet remains in a better than very fine condition.
