Germany, Heer. An Enlisted Personnel Winter Field Cap

(Heer Pelzmütze für Mannschaften). A well-preserved Heer Enlisted personnel winter field cap, constructed of a field-grey wool shell. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down walls consisting of a padded grey rayon base lined on the exterior with fine rabbit fur. The walls feature ear pieces which, when not in use to mitigate inclement weather conditions, roll up and tie together above the crown with a two-piece field-grey drawstring. Pinned onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a silvered zink Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 70 mm (w) x 30 mm (h) and retaining all three of its original attachment prongs. The interior is fully encompassed by a padded multi-piece grey rayon liner. A size mark of “56” is stamped onto the crown, and topped by an illegible Reichsbetriebsnummer (RBNr.). Measuring 25 cm in diameter, this high-quality cap demonstrates only minor and age-appropriate material fatigue and soiling (with some loss of finish to the eagle insignia), and remains in an extremely fine condition.
