Germany, Heer. An Austrian M17 Transitional Stahlhelm, Single Decal Version, Owner-Attributed Example by Bleckmann

(Heer Stahlhelm M17). An Heer Austrian M17 transitional Stahlhelm, constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains the majority of a Third Reich-period replacement apple-green paint. Three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference for the accommodation of the liner pins, while the crown is flanked on each side by protruding lugs with ventilation shafts, permitting the addition of a Stirnpanzer (brow plate). Notably, the skirt is also flanked by eyelets formerly accommodating chinstrap lugs, which have lost their caps. Situated directly below the left lug is a decal consisting of a black shield bearing a silver-grey Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 32 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The edge of the skirt is fully crimped for a smooth rim. A replacement metal ring surrounds the interior, fixed in position with the shell rivets, for the inclusion of a similarly updated brown leather liner. The latter culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional eyelet for the accommodation of a drawstring. Magnetic metal loops descend from the sides of the liner for the use of a chinstrap which has been lost to time. Stamped onto the crown is a mark of “B”, indicating that the steel originated in the Bleckmann rolling mill, above a date of “1917”. A handwritten owner’s surname is visible on the liner, in addition to a size mark of “59”. It measures approximately 24 cm (w) x 31 cm (l) x 17 cm (h). In addition to refurbishment and other issues previously considered, the helmet demonstrates moderate scratching and loss of paint, as well as age-appropriate material fatigue to the liner. This transitional example remains in a very fine condition.
