Germany, Heer. A Wehrpaß And Health Book To Gefreiter Josef Schmid

The Wehrpaß is dated to Regensburg on September 3, 1940. Measuring 105x147mm, very fine condition with some scuffing and light warping of the cover. The Gesundheitsbuch (health book) measures 143x209mm, very fine condition with some scuffing and creasing of the cover. It is accompanied by several notes and two health cards, further outlining Schmid’s medical condition.

Footnote:Josef Schmid was born on October 20, 1902 in St. Johann near Kelheim (Bavaria). He was drafted on December 3, 1941 and joined the 1st Company of Driver Replacement Battalion 46, stationed in Deggendorf. In March of 1942, Schmid was transferred to Landesschützen Battalion 827, and in May to Landesschützen Battalion 847. He was promoted to Oberschütze on October 1, 1942, and to Gefreiter on December 1. Schmid never saw front service and was only deemed fit for service with the homeland militia due to his medical condition. His health book outlines the medical history of a man in bad shape. More than once it is mentioned that he has aged prematurely. His dental health is so poor that it is one of the reasons mentioned why Schmid was not considered fit enough for war service. However, his biggest problems were caused by a chronic gall bladder infection. Because of this, his doctors wanted him to be transferred to a so called “Magen-Bataillon” (gastric battalion), units made up of the chronically ill.
