Germany, Heer. A Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 98 Christmas 1941 Commemorative Campaign Fob

 (Gebirgsjäger Erinnerungsabzeichen für Weihnachten 1941). Constructed of zink, topped by an integral suspension loop retaining an original brown leather fob, the obverse bearing a central raised edelweiss, circumscribed by inscriptions of “POLEN - FRANKREICH - SOWJET-RUSSLAND - POLEN”, joined at the centre by a date of “1939”, the reverse bearing a central raised Gebirgsjäger in full field kit, circumscribed by inscriptions of “KR-WEIHNACHTEN 1941”, “SOWJET-RUSSLAND”, and “2500 KM 15./G.J. 9”, unmarked, measuring 28 mm (w) x 39 mm (h), demonstrating moderate loss of finish, in very fine condition.

Footnote: At the time of issue, Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 98 had recently concluded a series of brutal offensive engagements against the Red Army in the Ukrainian SSR, and dug in to defend against the Soviet winter counteroffensive.
