Description
Description
(Heer Bajonett für einen Gebirgsjäger). A very well-preserved Heer Gebirgsjäger’s commemorative dress bayonet, measuring 34.4 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 20 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the tip and lower edge. A narrow fuller runs the majority of the length of the top edge of each side of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ORIGINAL EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic logo of a squirrel clutching a sword. The blade sits securely within a multi-piece hilt featuring a nickel-plated metal alloy core with a hooked quillon and pommel. An insert slot set into the pommel retains a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of polished staghorn compose the handle grip, and are fixed in position with two domed magnetic metal rivets. The obverse of the handle is inset with a central gilded and silvered magnetic metal edelweiss measuring 25 mm (w) x 35 mm (l). Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the inclusion of a frog, which is constructed of multiple panels of blackened leather and riveted into a loop for belt suspension. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks and sporadic tarnishing to the blade, wear to the hilt’s nickel plating, moderate loss of scabbard paint, and material fatigue throughout the frog. This Gebirgsjäger service memento remains in a near extremely fine condition.
