Description
Description
(Heer Schirmmütze für Mannschaften der Kavallerie/Aufklärer). A well-preserved Heer Cavalry/Reconnaissance EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap features reinforced side walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with golden-yellow piping, while an additional length of identical piping surrounds the outer edge of the crown. The former’s internal wire reinforcement has been removed to give the cap a popular but non-regulation “Sattelform” appearance. Pinned onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a silvered metal alloy Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 25 mm (h) and retaining all three attachment prongs. Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band is pinned with a two-piece aluminum alloy oak leaf wreath and cockade, measuring 65 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) overall. The lower edge of the cap band is flanked on each side by blackened magnetic metal studs which accommodate a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap which is adjusted with functional blackened magnetic metal buckles. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black on the obverse and in light brown on the reverse. A multi-piece beige rayon liner encompasses the interior, while a brown leather sweatband surrounds the walls and is perforated through the forehead with ventilation holes. The crown retains a transparent plastic moisture guard which protects a fully-legible maker’s mark of Breiter, Munich. Notably, a slot set into the guard retains a white cloth label bearing an owner’s name of “ORTNER”, along with a unit dedication of “1./AUFK. 7” (1. Schwadron, Aufklärungs-Regiment 7). The cap measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 16 cm (h). Issues consistent with age and field wear are evident, and include minor material fatigue to the wool base, as well as soiling throughout the interior liner with some detachment of the moisture guard. This untouched and fully-attributed cap remains in a better than very fine condition.
