Measuring 83x138mm, very fine condition with damage to the spine and light scuffing. It is dated to July 3, 1917 and signed in blue crayon by Deputy Company Leader, Lieutenant of the Reserve Odensass.
Footnote: Friedrich Krug was born on December 23, 1887 in Bergen on the island of Rügen, northeast Germany. He joined the Prussian army on August 22, 1914 and was placed in the Replacement Sapper Battalion 2. On December 24, 1914 he was promoted to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal) and on August 4, 1916 to NCO. No additional information is available for this substantial amount of time. On July 5, 1917 Krug was transferred to the Staff of Sapper Battalion 410. Just a few days later, on July 12, he joined the 3rd Company of the 1st Pomeranian Sapper Battalion 2. For the rest of the year Krug fought at the rivers Styr and Stochod on the Eastern Front, in the Ukraine. He was redeployed to Infantry Regiment 378 on March 1, 1918. With this unit Krug fought at the Western Front, first in Verdun, then near Crombres and les Eparger. On May 28 he was awarded the Austrian Merit Cross (Österreichisches Ehren-Verdienstkreuz am Band der Tapferkeitsmedaille). In June Krug took part in the Battle of Soissons and Reims, and in mid July he fought in the Battle at the Marne river. On August 1 he was transferred back to the Replacement Sapper Battalion 2 in Stettin. Five days later, on August 6, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class.
