Germany. A Mixed Lot Of Bayonets

(Bajonette). A mixed lot of three combat bayonets, including:

1. An Imperial S98/05 bayonet, measuring 520 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 365 mm-long tapering magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge, and with a fuller running the length of each side. It is unmarked with the exception of a maker’s mark on the reverse ricasso of “MAUSER A.G., OBERNDORF”, with an additional partially-legible inscription on the back of the blade. It sits firmly within a one-piece magnetic metal hilt with a hooked quillon. The handle grip is composed of two pieces of wood secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. It completes with a hollow insertion slot with a push-button spring release mechanism rendered non-functional by oxidation. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the accommodation of a frog. The throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. In addition to the compromised button, issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include oxidation to the blade and other metal features, as well as scratching and desiccation of the wooden handle grips. This field-used example is in an overall very fine condition.

2. A well-preserved M1884/98 bayonet, measuring 405 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 205 mm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge, and with a fuller running the length of each side. The blade is unmarked and sits firmly within a one-piece magnetic metal hilt which features an insertion slot retaining a functional push-button spring release. Two pieces of dark brown wood compose the handle grip and are secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. The hilt bears a number of marks, including a stamped serial number of “F10075” on the crossguard, as well as two Waffenamt marks near the pommel, one of which reads “WaA883”. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of black-painted magnetic metal. Emanating from the side of the shaft is a downward-pointing hook which retains a period original brown leather frog, itself stitched into a loop for belt suspension. The throat of the scabbard retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include oxidation of the blade and other metal features, as well as some scratching of the wooden handle grip. The bayonet is in an overall better than very fine condition.

3. A second M1884/98 bayonet, measuring 415 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 245 mm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge, and with a fuller running the length of each side. The obverse of the ricasso is stamped with a serial number of “5928”, while the reverse bears a maker’s mark of “COPPEL G.M.B.H.” for the firm of Alexander Coppel, Solingen. It sits securely within a one-piece magnetic metal hilt with an insertion slot featuring a push-button spring release which has been rendered non-functional by oxidation. Two pieces of ribbed and lacquered black wood compose the handle grip, and are secured together with one of two original magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and field use are evident, and include oxidation throughout the blade and metal features, the loss of one of the handle grip’s rivets, and possible repainting of the scabbard. It is in an overall fair condition.
