Description

(Médaille commémorative de l'expédition du Tonkin). Instituted in 1885. In silver, engraver marked "DANIEL DUPUIS" on the obverse, cornucopia hallmarked on the reverse, measuring 30 mm in diameter, dark patina, light contact and surface wear, replacement ribbon, very fine.

Footnote: The medal was instituted on the September 6, 1885, and awarded to the army and navy who served in the 1884-1885 campaign in north-eastern Indochina (North Vietnam), otherwise known as the Sino-French War. The Navy version incorporates seven battle honours, with "CAU-GIAI" at the top of the list, as per this example, the other six battle honours are common to both the Army and Navy versions.
