Czechoslovakia, I Republic. A Municipal Police Felt Helmet

A very well-preserved Czechoslovak Municipal Police helmet, constructed of a sturdy black pressed composite fibre. The shell features two silvered-bronze crossbars which meet in the middle at the top of the crown, and connect at all four ends to a band of identical construction set around the lower shell. Pinned onto the peak of the helmet is an ornate insignia consisting of a central silvered Czechoslovak coat of arms on a red enameled bed, in turn within a circular linden leaf wreath. Beneath the insignia is a stylized banner stamped with a number of “153”, which is presumably the badge number of the owner. Each side of the helmet is flanked by two stylized magnetic metal pips, and with a single raised lion’s head medallion which secures in place a decorative two-piece silvered bronze chinstrap. The chinstrap rests upon a protruding frontal visor and features intricate stamped designs. Completing the exterior features is a silvered bronze band which fully lines the circumference of the rim.

The interior presented plain, with the exception of an illegible and partially intact maker’s mark. It measures 195 mm (w) x 290 mm (l) x 150 mm (h). While well-preserved, some issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include some denting and loss of finish to the bronze features, loss of the interior sweatband, and minor soiling. The helmet is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
