(Orden del Mérito Naval). Instituted February 27th, 1912. Constructed of gilded silver with multi coloured enamels, on a fixed loop and swivel ring for suspension from a period original blue neck ribbon, the obverse consisting of a blue enameled Cross Pattée with a red enameled anchor superimposed on the badge, with a central medallion inscribed “MN” (Merito Naval) and surrounded by a ring of blue enamels inscribed “Honor, Virtuo, Valor”, in capitalized lettering, the reverse plain, marked “Sterling” as well as “Vilardebo Y Riera Habana Antigua”, measuring 49.4 mm (w) x 51.4 mm (l), in very fine condition.
Footnote: The Cuban Order of Naval Merit was issued as a I. Class Star, a II. Class Star, as well as a III. Class Officer. It was never issued as a neck-worn award. This example appears to be a jeweler modified to be worn around the neck.
