Cuba, Republic. A Pair of Medals of Eliseo Reyes I and II Class

(Medalla Eliseo Reyes I Clase and Medalla Eliseo Reyes II Clase), Both circular, 30,2 mm in diameter, gilt and silvered metal respectively, each bearing the portrait of Eliseo Reyes Rodríguez with the inscription “Eliseo Reyes” above, reverses displaying the Cuban national coat of arms circumscribed “Republica de Cuba / Consejo de Estado,” the first class suspended from a red ribbon with a central white stripe, the second class from a light grey ribbon with two red stripes, both accompanied by their corresponding ribbon bars, overall very fine.

Footnotes: The Medalla Eliseo Reyes was created by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba to honour the revolutionary figure Captain Eliseo Reyes Rodríguez (1940–1967), known as “Capitán San Luis.” A close associate of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Reyes served in the Rebel Army during the Cuban Revolution and later in the Bolivian campaign, where he was killed in combat. The medal is awarded in two classes to members of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces for notable acts of bravery, devotion to duty, or distinguished service in military or internationalist missions.
