(Orden del Mérito Militar "José María Córdova"). Instituted in 1950. Constructed of silver, an enameled black four-armed cross with enameled red details, encircled by an enameled gray border inscribed ORDEN AL MERITO GENERAL JOSE MARIA CORDOBA, obverse centre in gil featuring the portrait of Jose Maria Cordova facing front, the reverse is plain with inscription ARMAS DE DISCRECION PASO DE LOS VENCEDORES, suspended by original red ribbon with typical Officer’s horizontal pinback bar, measuring 43.63 mm in diameter, presenting tarnished gilt, with light contact on enamels, very fine. Accompanied by the miniature in silver, on original red ribbon with horizontal pinback bar, measuring 15.57 mm in diameter, presenting minor worn surfaces, otherwise set in very good condition.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit “Jose Maria Cordoba” was instituted by decree in 1950, and regulated in 1952. It is currently awarded to members of the Armed Forces for acts of valour and gallantry. It might be awarded to foreign Officers as well. This Order was named after José María Córdova Muñoz (1799-1829), a Colombian hero of the War for Independence.
