(Orden al Mérito Diplomático de Chile) A gilt and enamel Commander’s neck decoration, of three-piece construction, measuring 44.4 mm (w) x 79.4 mm (h) inclusive of suspension and weighing 46.9 grams, constructed in the form of a five-pointed white enamelled star with ball-tipped finials between the arms, the obverse centre bearing a blue enamel medallion inscribed “REPUBLICA DE CHILE” encircling a central star, the reverse with corresponding central medallion and plain gilt backing, suspended from its original solid deep blue neck ribbon, complete with integral suspension ring and lacking an accompanying ribbon bar, the enamels intact with light contact marks and minor surface wear consistent with careful handling.
Footnote: The Order of Diplomatic Merit of Chile was instituted in 1956 to recognize distinguished diplomatic service and contributions to Chile’s foreign relations. Administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decoration is awarded to diplomats, foreign officials, and individuals who have rendered notable service to Chile in the field of international relations. The Commander grade is worn suspended from a neck ribbon and ranks above Officer and below Grand Officer and Grand Cross within the order’s hierarchy.
