Description
1. Royal Canadian Naval Air Station Crest (RCNAS), multi-colour embroidered cloth crest on dark blue wool backing, featuring a crowned winged device surmounted by a stylized crown, with a rampant heraldic animal over a red shield at centre and the scroll below embroidered “RCNAS”, the reverse with black cloth backing typical of theatre-made insignia of the period, of cut-edge construction with hand-applied embroidery and felt elements, measuring approximately 16 CM mm in height x 11.5 CM width, displaying light wear to the wool backing and minor age-related toning to the embroidery threads, in very fine condition.
2. Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Base Crest (WHITEHORSE Y.T.), multi-colour embroidered cloth crest on dark blue felt backing, depicting a large yellow moose standing within a shield bordered by corded embroidery and flanked by evergreen trees, the lower scroll embroidered “Whitehorse Y.T.”, the reverse revealing hand-finished gauze backing and stitching indicative of wartime production, measuring approximately 16 CM Height x 11 CM in Width, with scattered loose threads and light wear consistent with age and storage, in very fine condition.
3. Goose Bay Aerodrome Labrador Crest, printed and embroidered cloth crest depicting a flying goose over a stylized northern landscape beneath a rising sun with the upper scrolls inscribed “CAN” and “USA” and the central inscription reading “GOOSE BAY AERODROME LABRADOR” with the dates “1943” and “1944” at the base, the reverse with plain cloth backing, measuring approximately 13.5 CM Height x 13 CM in width, showing minor fraying to the edges and light age wear to the fabric, in very fine condition.
4. Royal Canadian Air Force Northern Base Whitehorse Crest, multi-colour embroidered cloth crest on dark blue felt backing depicting a winged emblem surrounding the monogram “RCAF” with a galloping horse above and the lower scroll embroidered “WHITEHORSE Y.T.”, the reverse with plain cloth backing and wartime style stitching, measuring approximately 16 CM Height x 16 CM in width, with light fraying to the edges and minor age wear to the embroidery threads and with the backing coming off from the left hand side, in fine condition.
Footnote: During the Second World War, northern Canada became a vital aviation corridor supporting Allied operations across the Arctic and North Atlantic. Numerous Royal Canadian Air Force bases were established across the Yukon, Labrador, and other remote regions as part of the Northwest Staging Route and the transatlantic ferrying network used to move aircraft from North America to operational theatres overseas. Goose Bay Aerodrome in Labrador became one of the most important ferrying and staging points for Allied aircraft between 1941 and 1945 and operated jointly by Canadian and American forces. Whitehorse served as a critical hub along the Alaska Highway and the Northwest Staging Route supplying aircraft moving to Alaska and the Soviet Union. Embroidered crests such as these were produced during the war, often locally or by Canadian manufacturers including Crest Craft of Saskatoon, and were worn or collected by personnel stationed at these isolated northern bases.
