Hardcover, red cloth cover, the insignia on the front cover and the text and insignia on the spine in a gold-coloured ink, entitled "In This Sign - The Canadian Chaplains Service", by Honourary Major Walter T. Steven, M.A., B.Th., copyrighted in Canada in 1948 by The Ryerson Press of Toronto, Ontario, published in December 1948, printed and bound by The Ryerson Press. The Canadian Chaplains Service became the Royal Canadian Army Chaplain Corps after 1948. It includes sixteen black and white photographs, inserted in eight locations, between pages 18-19, 34-35, 50-51, 66-67, 82-83, 98-99, 114-115, 130-131. The book begins with a dedication: "In proud gratitude for our nine comrades for whom the trumpets have sounded on the other side.", followed by a Preface by the author, Honourary Major Walter T. Steven, M.A., B.Th., a Foreword by Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant-General Charles Foulkes, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., a Table of Contents and a List of Illustrations. It is signed in black ink to "Lt-Col H.M. Jackson / with (indecipherable) / of the Royal Canadian Army Chaplains Corps (P) / Cyril G.F. Stoue PC (P)" on the inside front cover endpaper. The book contains eight chapters: I - Back of the Beginnings; II - Chaplains in World War II; III - The Fight is on Again; IV - Wait! Wait! Wait!; V - Secret Raids and Special Forces; VI - Twenty Months in the Mediterranean; VII - D-Day and Onward; VIII - Meanwhile in Canada. The book contains 196 pages, printed in black ink, the text on an off-white paper stock, the sixteen pages of black and white photographs on a semi-gloss white paper stock, measuring 145 mm (w) x 220 mm (h) x 25.5 mm (d). Light discolouration evident on the top of the pages, the contents of the book remaining pristine. Near extremely fine.
