A notation on page facing the Preface states "Entered according to Act of Parliament of Canada, at the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, in the year One Thousand Nine Hundred, by J.L. Nichols & Co." The book details the history of the Boer War of 1899-1900 from a Canadian perspective, highlighted with sixty-four plates of images of historical figures and battle scenes. It begins with a Preface by J. Castell Hopkins, followed by a Table of Contents (List of Chapters and Subjects) and a Glossary of Boer Terms. The book is divided into two parts. Part I with thirteen chapters: I - Early Scenes of Settlement and Struggle; II - The Dutch and the Natives; III - The Great Trek and its First Results; IV - Birth of the Dutch Republics; V - Development of Dutch Rule; VI - Development of Cape Colony; VII - Imperial Policy in South Africa; VIII - The Native Races of South Africa; IX - Character of the South African Boer; X - The Annexation of the Transvaal; XI - Natal and the Zulu War; XII - A Review of the South African Question; XIII - The Colonies and the War. The book contains 512 pages that includes 448 pages of text in English along with 64 pages of black and white photograph and illustration plates interspersed throughout the book, printed in black ink, on an off-white paper stock, with the previous owner's name in pencil on the inside front cover endpaper, measuring 165 mm (w) x 230 mm (h) x 46 mm (d). It exhibits soiling on the front and back covers and the spine, the battle image on the front cover scuffed, the cover having experienced partial separation from the bulk of the pages and exposes the underlying structure, a few of the pages having come loose at the back of the book, some of the pages within displaying tearing, fold marks and soiling.
