A large, framed, family portrait of Princess Juliana, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, and their three daughters during the Second War. The duke is in uniform denoting a NEDERLAND shoulder patch denoting Dutch forces in exile, with wing badge denoting air force. The image is signed “Juliana” and “Bernhard” along the top edge of the photograph. The studio is signed in the bottom right corner denoting publication in Ottawa. Contained in a large frame with glass cover and engraved wooden edge, the reverse is plain with taped edges, a single hook has been drilled into the top of the frame for hanging, measures 465 mm (w) x 384 mm (h), light wear to frame, overall very fine.
Footnote: During World War II, Crown Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her daughters lived in exile in Ottawa, Canada, from 1940-1945, becoming part of the community by volunteering, knitting for soldiers, and enrolling their daughters in school, with Juliana giving birth to Princess Margriet in 1943 in a hospital room temporarily declared Dutch territory to ensure her Dutch citizenship, a gesture repaid with the annual Dutch Tulip Festival in Ottawa.
