A Memorial Cross, in silver, reverse engraved 769577 PTE. W. LUND, reverse marked STERLING, measures 31.8 mm (w) x 34.7 mm (h), dark patina, extremely fine.
Footnote: William Lund was born Blackburn, Lancaster, England in February 1890. He was a farmer when he enlisted on January 3, 1916 with the 124th Battalion in Toronto.
In August 1916, he was serving with the 205th “Tigers of Hamilton” Battalion, but was later transferred to the 180th Battalion. He sailed from Halifax via the S.S. Olympic on November 14, 1916. While in England, he was a member of the 3rd Reserve Battalion and later the 123rd Battalion. He embarked for France in March 1917, and was struck off strength to the 29th Battalion.
He was awarded the good conduct badge on June 10, 1918.
He was hospitalized at the No. 12 Canadian Field Ambulance for tonsillitis on February 22, 1918. Lund was killed in action on August 9th, 1918.
On 9 August 1918, during the opening phase of the Battle of Amiens, the 29th Battalion (Vancouver), CEF was actively engaged at the front as part of the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division.
