He was a resident of Montreal, Quebec, when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Cadet (1261649) with No. 6 (McGill) Overseas Battery, Siege Artillery, CEF, on May 6, 1916 in Montreal, at the age of 18, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Dr. G.S. Hume of Sherbrooke, Quebec, stating that he belonged to an Active Militia (the 22nd Sherbrooke Battery), that he had previous military service (one month with the 53rd Sherbrooke Regiment and two months with the 22nd Sherbrooke Battery), that he was not married and that his trade was that of Student. The 6th Canadian Siege Battery recruited in the Montreal area in 1916 and were re-named the 7th Canadian Siege Battery when they re-organized in England. Hume later rose to the rank of Major with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. In early 1940, his former comrades from the 7th Canadian (McGill) Siege Battery recognized his accomplishments by giving him this flask. By 1941, he had attained the rank of Colonel and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. Hume was awarded the Officer of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire effective March 17, 1945, as mentioned in the Supplement to the London Gazette 37038 of Tuesday, April 17, 1945, on Thursday, April 19, 1945, page 2063.
