A 1914-15 Star, bronze, full size, reverse has been shaved and privately engraved 41647 SERGT. J. DYER. CAN. FD. ART. heavily plated, minor wear, near very fine.
A British War Medal, silver, full size, rim has been shaved down and privately engraved 641647 SERGT. J. DYER. C. F. A., residue and very dark patina, light contact marks, better than fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim has been shaved down and privately engraved 41647 SERGT. J. DYER. C. F. A., scratches and gilt wear evident, near very fine.
Accompanied by a brass plate engraved SERGEANT JAMES DYER CANADIAN FIELD ARTILLERY FRANCE 1914-1919, measures 105 mm (w) x 27 mm (h), a small hole at each end, very fine.
Footnote: James Dyer was born in Manchester, England in November 1874. He was employed as a boilermaker, living in Montreal when he enlisted on September 23, 1914 at Valcartier.
After arriving in France in March 1917, he was taken on strength by the CAVC, and attached to the 2nd brigade, CFA. Throughout his service, he dislocated his left thumb multiple times.
He was discharged from the force after being deemed medically unfit (laryngitis) on March 19,1918.
Dyer died on July 31, 1948.
