Canada, CEF. A First War Pair to Sjt. Paul, 78th Infantry

A British War Medal, in silver, rim impressed 217082 SJT J.F. PAUL 78-CAN.INF., light wear, nice patina, very fine condition. 

A Victory Medal, in bronze gilt, rim impressed 217082 SJT J.F. PAUL 78-CAN.INF., scattered gilt wear, very fine. 

Accompanied by photocopies of Sjt. Paul’s attestation papers. 

Footnote: John Ferguson Paul was born May 7th, 1878 in Falkirk, Scotland. He was a merchant with three years experience with the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers and 18 months with the volunteer reserve in Vancouver prior to enlisting. He joined the 96th Battalion on July 1st, 1916. The unit sailed on September 26, 1916.

He was transferred to the 92nd Battalion in October 1916. In January 1917, he was transferred to the 5th Reserve Battalion, and then the 11th Reserve Battalion in mid May.  On May 27, he was transferred to the 78th Battalion. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left foot and one to his face at the end of June 1917, while serving with the 78th battalion. He was later hospitalized in September 1917 due to trench fever. He was discharged on June 12, 1919 in Winnipeg. Paul died on December 6, 1967 in Shaughnessy Hospital, Vancouver, B.C.
