A British War Medal, in silver, full size, rim impressed 663680 PTE. E. J. HOPTROUGH. C.M.G. BDE., original ribbon, light wear, lovely patina (very dark on reverse), extremely fine.
A Victory Medal, bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed 663680 PTE. E. J. HOPTROUGH. C.M.G. BDE., light wear, near extremely fine.
A 164th Infantry Battalion Cap Badge, pickled copper, blackened edges and reverse, unmarked, reverse bears two lugs with pin intact, measures 39.5 mm (w) x 45.4mm (h), light wear, very fine condition.
Accompanied by the original packaging for the medals, named to Pte. E.J. Hoptrough, contained in plastic cases, both very fine.
Footnote: Edward John Hoptrough was born in Portsmouth, England in 1883. He was employed as a farmer prior to enlisting with the 164th Battalion on April 13, 1916.
He was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Reserve Battalion in April 1917 before being assigned to the Canadian Machine Gun Brigade in May 1917. Hoptrough arrived in France in September 1917. From December 1917 until January 1918, he suffered from trench fever.
He proceeded to Canada via the H.M.T.S Empress of Britain in April 1919. Hoptrough was officially demobilized in May 1919.
