A British War Medal, in silver, full size, rim impressed 202198 PTE. H. SWARTZ. 1-CAN. INF., dark patina, light wear, very fine.
A For Service Rendered Badge, in silver, reverse bears a vertical pin, numbered 038747, measures 32.9 mm (w), very fine.
Footnote: Herbert Swartz was born in Walla Walla Washington in April 1897. He was employed as a farmer in Milk River, Alta. He enlisted with the 97th Battalion on December 20 1915.
His unit sailed on May 21, 1916. He was drafted to the 1st Battalion overseas on September 15, 1915, and left for the 1st Canadian entrenching battalion on September 29.
Swartz suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm and thorax on March 31, 1917. He ultimately died of wounds at the No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station.
