Canada. An Elementary Flying Training School Instructor’s Badge

A cloth instructor’s badge measuring 79.2 mm (w) x 48.7 mm (h), constructed on a black felt backing in the form of outstretched embroidered wings flanking a central device composed of a red maple leaf surmounted by a vertical wheat stalk and circular “EFTS” monogram, executed in red, cream, and gold thread, the reverse with original black paper backing intact, showing light edge wear and minor fraying consistent with period uniform removal, in fine to very fine condition.

Footnote: Elementary Flying Training Schools (EFTS) operated under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the Second World War and were responsible for the initial flight instruction of pilot trainees. Instructors at these schools were typically experienced Royal Canadian Air Force personnel assigned to train cadets in primary flying techniques before advancement to Service Flying Training Schools. Cloth instructor badges such as this example were worn on the uniform to denote instructional status within the training establishment.
