Canada. A General Service Medal For Fenian Raids to Gunner O. Julian, Grand Trunk Railway Artillery

A General Service Medal with FENIAN RAID 1866 Clasp, in silver, full size, rim impressed Gr. O. Julian. G.T.R.A., worn on replacement ribbon, very dark patina, small edge marks from the naming, in better than very fine condition.

Footnote: Gunner Oct. Julian is present on the Medal Roll of the Grand Truck Railway Artillery for the Fenian Raid 1866. On June 1, 1866, the Fenians (an Irish American organization dedicated to freeing Ireland from British rule) invaded Canada.

The Grand Trunk Railway Artillery (G.T.R.A.) was a Canadian volunteer militia unit raised in 1866 during the Fenian Raids. It was composed largely of Grand Trunk Railway employees, organized to protect vital railway infrastructure such as bridges, stations, and rail lines, and to support the rapid movement of troops.

Although designated as artillery, the unit’s primary role was local defence and security rather than field gunnery. Members served on active duty during Fenian alerts, mainly in Canada West (Ontario). Service in the G.T.R.A. qualified for the Canada General Service Medal with “Fenian Raid 1866” clasp, making medals to this unit both legitimate and relatively scarce.
