Brazil, Kingdom. A Rare First War Victory Medal, Official Type II

Instituted June 22, 1923. An Official Type II Brazilian Victory Medal, in bronze, with ‘J.S.’ Initials on lower limb of rays below angles wing tip denoting Jorge Soubre, reverse depicts the arms of the Allied nations, those of Brazil are found in the centre, with the inscription; ‘GRANDE GUERRA PELA CIVILISACAO’ (Great War for Civilisation), measures 35.18 mm (w) x 39.37 mm (h), worn on replacement period ribbon, dark patina, very fine. 

Footnote: Brazil entered the First World War in October 1917 after German U-boats sank several Brazilian merchant ships, becoming the only South American country to declare war on Germany. Its military role was limited but meaningful: the Brazilian Navy conducted anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort duties in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and Brazil sent a medical mission to support Allied forces in France. Politically, Brazil’s participation raised its international profile, leading to a role at the Paris Peace Conference and membership in the League of Nations, marking its first step onto the global diplomatic stage.

The Brazilian medal was awarded for a minimum of three month’s active service during World War I. Approximately 2,500 medals were awarded.
