Type III (1932-on); Commander's Badge in silver gilt with red, white, light blue, dark blue, light green and dark green enamels, measuring 62 mm (w) x 87.8 mm (h) inclusive of its wreath suspension, on its full-length neck ribbon, intact enamels, extremely fine. Star in cast silver gilt with white, light blue and dark blue enamels, maker marked ""la royale RIO BRASIL"" on the reverse cartouche, measuring 76.5 mm (w) x 73.5 mm (h), vertical pinback, intact enamels, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Imperial Order of the Southern Cross is a Brazilian order of chivalry founded by Emperor Pedro I on December 1, 1822. This order was intended to commemorate the independence of Brazil and the coronation of Pedro I. The name derives from the geographical position of the country, under the constellation of the Southern Cross and also in memory of the name ""Terra de Santa Cruz"" (Land of the Holy Cross) given to Brazil at the time of European discovery. Unlike the Imperial Order which was awarded to Brazilians and foreigners alike, the newly established republican National Order of the Southern Cross is awarded to foreigners only. When the Order was re-established in by presidential decree on January 13, 1932, it was restricted to foreigners only with the stipulation that all awards of the Order constitute an act of foreign relations on the part of the Brazilian Government. It is awarded in six classes: Grand Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
