Description
(Ordre de Léopold / Leopoldsorde). Instituted in 1832. Civil Division, Type I (1832-1951). In silver with red, black, white and green enamels, both centrepieces in Gold, unmarked, monogram "LL RR" on the reverse centrepiece, measuring 39 mm (w) x 66 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, intact enamels, green laurels have been re-enamelled, original ribbon, better than fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, black pebbled exterior, lid bearing a capital "L" surmounted by the royal crown in gold-coloured ink, inside lid lined in white satin-like cloth, padded and maker marked "H. Walravens & Cie / 9 Rue Joseph Claes / BRUXELLES", black felt medal bed, push release, measuring 70.5 mm (w) x 126.3 mm (h) x 23 mm (d), scuffing and wear evident on the exterior, pinholes present on the lining of the inside lid, fraying in the fabric overlying the hinged area, case also better than fine.
Footnote: The Order of Leopold I was instituted on July 11, 1832. It was awarded for exemplary bravery in war and especially distinguished service to the Belgian state, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight, in Civil, Military and Maritime Divisions.
