(Dutch: Leopoldsorde, French: Ordre de Léopold). Instituted in 1832. Type I (1832-1951). Grand Cross: in silver with red and black enamels, cypher of Leopold I (LL RR) on the reverse centrepiece, measuring 58 mm (w) x 103 mm (h) inclusive of its crown and laterally-pierced ball suspension, chipping evident in the white enamels on the points of the arm at 6 o'clock on both sides, extensive chipping in the red enamels on the reverse centrepiece ring, accompanied by a full-length sash; and Breast Star: multi-piece construction, insignia in silver with red and black enamels, the lion and the text in Gold on the centrepiece ring, mounted to an eight-pointed silver star base, hallmarked with a boar's head on the pin, measuring 84 mm (w) x 91.8 mm (h), vertical pinback flanked by dual stays, intact enamels. Dark patina on both pieces, together, better than very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Leopold is one of the three current Belgian national honourary orders of knighthood. It is the highest order of Belgium and is named in honour of King Leopold I. It consists of a military, a maritime and a civilian division. The maritime division is only awarded to personnel of the merchant navy, and the military division to military personnel. The decoration was established on July 11, 1832 and is awarded for extreme bravery in combat or for meritorious service of immense benefit to the Belgian nation. The Order of Leopold is awarded by Royal order and is issued in five classes: Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
