(Orden vom Zähringer Löwen, Großkreuz). Issued 1815-1918. The set consisting of a Grand Cross and Grand Cross Sash Badge. The Grand Cross consisting of a silver eight-pointed star; the obverse depicting a central red enameled medallion with a gold rampant lion, surrounded by a white ring of enamels, inscribed “FÜR EHRE UND WAHRHEIT” (German - For honour and truth) in gold letters, with two enameled laurel leaves at the bottom; the reverse plain, with a vertical banjo style pinback, a barrel hinge, and a broad catch; measuring 86.60 mm (w) x 86.28 mm (h); weighing 61.9 grams. 2) The Sash Badge consisting of a Gold four armed star with silver gilt arabesques between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a green enameled cross pattée, with a center enameled medallion depicting the ruins of the “Stammschloss Zähringen”, surrounded by a golden rippled ring; the reverse with a central red enameled medallion depicting a golden rampant lion, surrounded by a golden rippled ring; on a double looped ring for suspension; accompanied by a large and full length period original sash ribbon; measuring 59.55 mm (w) x 59.42 mm (h). Accompanied by its case of issue; constructed of heavy cardstock, with a textured burgundy faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the exterior of the lid embossed with the crowned royal monogram in gold; with a lined interior lid, a recessed medal bed (it has come loose through time and can be removed), a functional clasp closure, and a functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 131 mm (w) x 398 mm (h); in overall extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
