Description

(Österreichisch-kaiserlicher Franz-Joseph-Orden, Ritterkreuz). Instituted by Emperor Franz Joseph I on 2 December 1849. A bronze gilt and enamel cross pattée with red enameled arms edged in gilt, overlaid on a finely detailed gilt double-headed Imperial Austrian eagle with open wings, each head crowned. Obverse central medallion in white enamel with raised, gilded, intertwined monogram “FJ” for Franz Joseph. Reverse medallion in white enamel bearing the date “1849” in raised gilt numerals, commemorating the year of the Order’s foundation. The cross is surmounted by the Imperial Austrian crown, through which passes a suspension ring stamped with a Star indicating Bronze workmanship.

Mounted on its original triangular folded silk ribbon in solid red. Enamels intact, minor contact marks on reverse medallion. Very Fine.
