Austria, Imperial. An 1849 Merit Cross, in Gold, c.1880

(Goldenes Verdienstkreuz mit Krone). Instituted 16 February 1850. (1850-1918 issue). Military Division. Constructed of 18K Gold with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Cross with red enamelled arms, the obverse with a central white enamelled medallion bearing a central monogram of Franz Joseph I, circumscribed by an inscription of “VIRIBUS UNITIS” (“UNITED FORCES”), the reverse with a central white enamelled medallion bearing a gilt date of “1849”, on a gilded and enamelled crown suspension with loop connecting to a replacement tri-fold ribbon, the loop maker marked with Austrian Gold mark denoting manufacture between 1872-1922 and maker mark of Buc[hnuch?], measuring 35.7 mm (w) x 58.2 mm (h – inclusive of cross adorned crown suspension), weighs 16.39 grams (including ribbon), light wear to enamels, reverse 1849 slightly loose, the decoration remains in very fine condition.
