Description
The collection consists of a 1920 Austrian travel passport (99x143mm, better than very fine) and 46 photos and picture postcards (54x80mm to 129x178mm, very fine to near mint), dated between 1916 and 1931. The items are connected to the Kutnar family, with several family members appearing on the pictures. The passport is issued to Otto Kutnar from Korneuburg (Austria), born 1905, for the purpose of traveling to Yugoslavia. A card-mounted photo dated to February 24, 1909 and showing an Austro-Hungarian Master Sergeant is signed “Kutnar”, with the first name being illegible. A man in the same rank stands next to a woman on a picture dated to May 1916. A postcard showing a Sergeant of the Austro-Hungarian army with an extensive medal bar is to Lieutenant Hans Kutnar. Later pictures identify a similar looking man as “Papa Janez”, “Papa” meaning “daddy” and Janez being the Slovenian form of Hans. Janez is shown on a studio portrait from 1920 in a Yugoslavian uniform in the rank of Lieutenant in the Yugoslavian air force. He makes an appearance on several picture from the late 1920s, between 1927 and 1929, most of them taken at the Zagreb aerodrome. Many of these show planes, several show Janez’ children, Zvonko and Marjan, and his wife Miza. Two large photos show a gathering of Yugoslavian officers in 1930. Janez can be seen in the center of one, holding the rank of First Captain. The latest picture shows him standing in front of a plane in an army leather flight coat in 1931. A final picture, taken in Celje, Slovenia, shows a Yugoslavian air force soldier, in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, possibly Janez’ son.
